About Me

Hi! I'm Melissa, and welcome to my virtual portfolio. Please look around to learn more about my teaching history, methods, and initiatives.

Some of my favorite projects are my podcasts and my YouTube videos, so please be sure to check those out!

One of the areas where I'm learning and growing the most is my understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion and the impacts of racism in STEM education.  Be sure to view my DEI statement for more information on that.

Student Evaluations

After serving as a teaching assistant for several sections of several courses every semester spanning from the fall of 2015 through the spring of 2021, I have more teaching evaluations than could reasonably be shared here (please reach out to if you are interested in access to the for the full portfolio of student evaluations).  However, I wanted to select some samples that demonstrate how my teaching has grown over the course of the past few years, beginning with my first semester of teaching recitation in the fall of 2018.  Two things that I have learned on this journey are the importance of effective communication in teaching and the importance of identifying what the students are struggling with in order to help them succeed.  By comparing the student comments I received in 2018 to those that I received in 2019 and 2020 (in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic) it will be evident that the emphasis of my students' comments shifted to focus on my ability to effectively communicate the material and that I worked to help them succeed as much as possible.

Evaluation summary and comments from the Fall of 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. At this time I was given the opportunity to be a teaching fellow, taking over full time lecture responsibilities from a professor on short term leave.

Evaluation summary and comments from the Fall of 2019. At this time I was a teaching assistant and was given the opportunity to substitute in for certain lectures in addition to teaching recitation full time. Please note an increase in student comments regarding effectiveness of and willingness to work with the students.

Evaluation summary and comments from the Fall of 2018. At this time I was a teaching assistant and was given the opportunity to teach recitation consistently for the first time.
